International Halal Expo

LIVEWIRE Brunei, under Brunei Shell Petroleum, participated in the halal expo, showcasing local entrepreneurs and their successful projects.

It was launched in Brunei on May 1, 2001, in response to Brunei Darussalam Economic Concil’s (BDEC) efforts to support a long-term sustainable economic development.

In line with these development, the ‘ Udang and Ikan’ Tropika project (or in short U&l — Freshwater fish and prawn farm project) has been established, situated on a 10-acre plot of land in Kampong Bukit Selangan in Temburong.

The project is a social investment initiative geared towards developing local business opportunities in the aquaculture sector in Brunei Darussalam, particularly for the community in the district.

It will be managed by a local cooperative, U&l, and comprise 327 locals.

In an interview with the Bulletin, LiveWIRE Brunei Programme Director Pg Redzuan bin Pg Haji Abbas said, “It is a commercial farming project which is equipped with modern facilities. Located on top of a hill, it is the first commercial farm of its kind.

“It consists of a water reservoir, sediment ponds and six ponds for prawns (udang galah). The water we receive is from a nearby river” he said.

“Before we launched the project, we studied the water system and discovered that the ponds would never run dry due to the water reservoir,” he added.

In terms of infrastructure, Temburong lags behind, and thus this project can contribute towards economic activities.

“One of the solution we thought of immediately was to help the community in the Temburong District by creating a ’sustainable infrastructure economy’,” he added.

Meanwhile, the expo also saw a project run by young local entrepreneurs from PRIME Utama Agrotech, a consultancy service company and supplier of agriculture and aquaculture products, which is a member of LiveWIRE Brunei Business Network.
