| 'Determination, product key to success' |
| |
DETERMINATION and having the right product are among the most common characteristics of successful "graduates" of LiveWIRE, said a representative from the community outreach programme.
Dina Damit, LiveWIRE Administrative Assistant, said LiveWIRE participants who had determination and the right product have become successful entrepreneurs.
The Brunei Shell Petroleum-backed LiveWIRE, which began in 2001 to spur youth's interest on entrepreneurship, has seen participation from 3,000 Bruneians, of which 12 per cent have successfully gone on to start their own business. The figure represents one of the highest rates worldwide where Shell LiveWIRE is operating.
"It's all about determination, commitment and effort of the entrepreneur to be successful," said Dina.
She said "LiveWIRE tries its best to provide training, but the entrepreneurs must also put in their effort," she said.
Dina noted though not all LiveWIRE participants want to be entrepreneurs. Many are students and pensioners who join for self-development and leadership training.
She said that there are entrepreneurs who have become well-established after attending the full programmes provided by LiveWIRE.
She said LiveWIRE participants set up Hidayah IT Learning Centre, MSP Company which is part of the Udang and Ikan (prawn and fish) project in Temburong, and Whiteroses Enterprise Skin Care Salon.
Dina said that after attending LiveWIRE programmes, everyone could actually succeed, depending on the participants' determination and product. Timing is also a factor, she said.
She cited several LiveWIRE programmes which could help prospective entrepreneurs how to start. She mentioned LiveWIRE's workshops like Bright Ideas, Become a Successful Owner Manager and some follow-up courses like Business Dialogs, Business Awards, Business Counselling and Leadership Camp.
She said that the Bright Ideas Workshop is a two-days course for participants, who have no idea on what it takes to be a business owner. She said the workshop mainly focuses on business creativity and having the mindset necessary to start a business.
She said the Become a Successful Owner Manager programme is a five-day workshop for participants wishing to progress further in building their business ideas into actual business. She said it also includes developing business ideas and doing associated market research, preparing business plans and financial forecasts. It also touches on starting and running a business, marketing, management and financial control.
Dina said the follow-up courses target participants who want to go to the next step, such as networking, among others. Courtesy of The Brunei Times
